Golden Hour on the W&OD

May 24, 2026 · 1 min read

Rolled out of Ashburn at 6:30. The W&OD is flat and fast — old rail bed, dead straight in sections. On the e-bike you can hold a pace that would be miserable unassisted, which is the whole point on a weeknight when daylight is short.

The stretch from Ashburn to Leesburg runs through a tree corridor. Low sun at that hour turns it into long stripes of light and shadow. Good stretch of trail.

Hit the edge of Leesburg, grabbed water, turned around. The sky over the Blue Ridge was doing that pink thing — maybe 20 minutes of light left. Wind finally at my back on the return.

28 miles door to door in about 70 minutes. On a Tuesday.
